This blog is about our restoration of an Umgebindehaus in South East Germany, close to the Polish and Czech borders. The area is very scenic, with two lakes close by, and contains a small mountainous area, called the Zittau Hills, where people can ski, hike, or cycle, hence the name “By the Berg”
(We have another holiday rental which we called “By the Beach” in Swakopmund, Namibia. Here’s a link to the blog and website https://swakopseaviewapartment.wordpress.com, http://swakopseaviewapartment.com)
The project began as a family adventure, for my children to learn more about their German heritage, and for me, hopefully, to improve my German to some level of competence.
The house is a traditional style, typical of the area, and is a protected building.
The house has two floors, and will be separated into two dwellings.
Once finished the bottom floor will be available as a holiday rental, as detailed on the website http://www.bytheberg.com, while the upper floor will be available as a permanent rental.
